Since this is my first journal entry I guess I'll go back in time a bit to give you an idea what's been going on.
After Tour De Georgia I was scheduled to drive a team Mini back to San Diego to keep for the rest of the year.
I was excited to take a few days off the bike and make a cross country road trip through some areas that I
haven't been to before. But plans change, during Georgia I got a call from my mom letting me know that the
cancer my grandma had was spreading quickly. Luckily I was able to get a flight from Georgia up to Oregon
where my grandma and the rest of the family were. I haven't spent much time with my mom or grandma in the
last 12 years so it was good to be up there with everyone. My grandma died after I had been there for a few
days. It was tough to see her so sick, I'll always remember her swimming with me or playing in the creek with
my brother and I when we were kids.
It felt so nice to finally get back to San Diego after a lengthy road trip of racing and the emotions of being with my grandma. The cycle of life became very apparent when I went with Cindy to her first pre-natal visit and we heard our baby's heartbeat. Everything became very real at that moment. It all began to sink in, I really am going to be a dad, and there will be some BIG changes coming. Over the next few weeks I got in some good quality training and a few local races on the weekends. I even got to be around for Cindy's graduation from SDSU. She has worked so hard over the years so it was wonderful to see her accomplish such a big goal. Now she can put her nurtitional degree to use trying to keep me in line. I flew out to Nashville May 23rd to do the 4 day Soto Memorial Race with teammates, Trent, Jeff, and Cesar. My goal was to get in some hard racing bfore Philly week. This was supposed to be just a regional race but the large purse changed that. Healthnet sent a good squad as well as Priority and a handful of other pro's. Trent showed his good form by winning the opening time trial, I had a good ride as well and got 4th. My form was exactly where I was hoping it would be. With a 3rd in the circuit race and 5th in the crit I had moved up to 2nd overall going into the last day. The final day was a 110 mile road race that finished on a climb. Trent and Jeff were confident in me and rode with Karl Menzies (Healthnet) on the front for 100 miles controlling a break that was up the road. Once we hit the final climb I was still feeling fresh and was able to drop John Murphy from Healthnet and put a big enough gap on him to win the overall. It was great to win after all the work that Jeff and Trent did for me. This was my first stage race overall win, so it felt pretty good. I lost the overall at Tour of Utah two years ago on the last day so it was fitting to win this one on the last day. I've spent the last few days at my director, Jesse's house where Trent lives. We've done a couple of good rides and drank a lot of coffee in the mean time. I'm about to start getting packed to head to Philly for the Triple Crown. These are three of the biggest one day events in the country and have been a big goal of mine all year. Cindy and her sister Sarah are coming to Philly to watch the final race. Hopefully I'll give them something to cheer about! |
